Esse Halbertsma: Conductor & Brass Player

Esse Halbertsma has been active as a conductor in The Hague and the surrounding region since 2022. In addition to conducting, she plays both trumpet and trombone with various orchestras. Growing up in a musical family, she has been involved in the symphonic music world from an early age. She is currently studying wind band conducting (HaFaBra) at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague with Alex Schillings, while also pursuing orchestral conducting studies with Ivan Meylemans. Through these studies, she has had the opportunity to work with a wide variety of ensembles and orchestras, many of which she has conducted, while also exploring her interests in early music and jazz.

Esse is currently the conductor of KH Delft, a position she took up in May of this year. The orchestra is part of the larger wind band association Harmoniekapel Delft. She has also conducted the Hofstads Youth Orchestra, Prometheus Delft, and Kunst naar Kracht Loosduinen.

Last season, Esse was appointed Assistant Conductor of the Hague Student Orchestra Valerius, then under the direction of the orchestra’s founder and principal conductor, Arne Visser. Following a successful season, the orchestra invited her to return as its Principal Conductor, a role she took over in September 2026.

Esse Halbertsma is sinds 2022 actief in Den Haag en omstreken als dirigent. Naast dirigeren speelt ze trompet en trombone bij verschillende orkesten, ze is namelijk door haar muzikale gezin van jongs af aan al actief in de symfonische wereld. Ze studeert op dit moment HaFaBra directie aan het Koninklijk Conservatorium Den Haag bij Alex Schillings. Verder studeert ze orkestdirectie bij Ivan Meylemans. Via deze opleiding is ze in contact gekomen met vele verschillende ensembles en orkesten die zij ook mag leiden en heeft ze haar interesses in vroege muziek en jazz hier ook kunnen verkennen.

Op dit moment is Esse dirigent van de KH Delft, waar ze afgelopen mei is begonnen. Dit orkest is onderdeel van een grote vereniging van harmonieorkesten, onder de naam Harmoniekapel Delft. Ook heeft ze gedirigeerd bij het Hofstads Jeugdorkest, Prometheus Delft en Kunst naar Kracht Loosduinen.

Vorig seizoen is Esse aangenomen als assistent dirigent van het Haags Studentenorkest Valerius, toen onder leiding van toenmalig dirigent en oprichter van de vereniging, Arne Visser. Het orkest ervaarde dit positief en heeft haar als vaste dirigent teruggevraagd, waar ze in september 2026 mee is begonnen.
