Conductor Arne Visser

Arne Visser (1981) has been the permanent conductor of Valerius since its foundation. Besides being a conductor, he is tubaist. Arne grew up in a musical family, and played his first notes with the ‘Schoonhoven fanfare‘, ‘brass band‘ and with ‘Viotta Youth Orchestra‘ in The Hague. Since his studies, he has been working as a freelance tuba player at various symphony orchestras in the Netherlands and abroad. Besides he teaches tuba & euphonium at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague (School for Young Talent). He is asked to rehearse various conservatories, conducts amateur symphony orchestras and is a regular tubaist at the music theater group Neo fanfare 9 × 13. In 2016 he conducted the Codarts Symphony Orchestra at the European première of “Become Ocean” (John Luther Adams), and conducted the “Orchester de Chambre de Genève” during masterclasses by Arie van Beek.

He is the conductor of 3 orchestras: ‘Valerius’, ‘Bataafs Symphonic Orchestra (BSO)‘ in The Hague and the ‘National Project Orchestra‘. A busy concert agenda in the Netherlands is combined with tours abroad (Germany, France and China). On the desk were large pieces such as “The Planets” (Holst), “Pictures at an Exhibition” (Mussorgsky), “Lord of The Rings” (De Meij) and the “Fifth Symphony” by Shostakovich. There was also frequent collaboration with ballet groups, theater groups, breakdancers, opera choirs, soloists & pop bands. In 2014, a successful Bollywood series was launched, including Theater Zuidplein, Lucent Danstheater and Theater Diligentia with both Indian and Dutch soloists.

Arne studied tuba with Hendrik-Jan Renes at the Royal Conservatory (KC), and attended master classes with famous tuba artists such as Roger Bobo, Jens Bjørn Larsen and Rex Martin. At the KC he also obtained his HaFaBra conducting diploma with Alex Schillings, and took orchestral conducting lessons with Wim Bredenhorst, José Miguel Esandi, Arie van Beek and Jurjen Hempel. He studied orchestral conducting with Hans Leenders at the Rotterdam Conservatory of Codarts. He was twice invited to conduct the National Youth Orchestra in De Doelen during master classes by maestri Mark Wigglesworth and Etienne Siebens. He also took orchestral conducting lessons with George Hurst and Robert Houlihan during the Canford Summerschool (UK).

As a freelance tubaist he played with prominent orchestras and ensembles, including with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra (in the TV series (in de tv-serie ‘Bloed Zweet en Snaren’), the Residentie Orchestra and the Ballet Orchestra, but also in the Orquesta Sinfónico de Tenerife and the Tenerife City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. For four years he was a permanent tubaist and board member with the National Youth Orchestra, and toured Europe with the World Youth Orchestra. He won the soloist prize with the euphonium at the Netherlands Brass Band Festival in 1997, and successfully participated in tuba in the UGDA European competition for young soloists (Luxembourg), where he was later called back as a jury member.
